Located at 22 Morris Street, Wooloowin, and situated next to Cedar Wood’s Greville Wooloowin estate, the site brings new life to the historic former Sisters of Mercy Convent, transforming it into a state-of-the-art childcare facility that commenced operations this week.
The development is an exemplary case of adaptive reuse, incorporating a sensitively upgraded heritage-listed convent built in 1912 with a modern addition designed to complement the original structure. The former convent, part of a significant complex including a church and other historic buildings, is celebrated for its early twentieth-century architecture featuring Spanish Mission Style parapets, roughcast render façade, and a steeply pitched iron roof.
Significant efforts were made to preserve the building’s historical integrity while upgrading it to meet modern standards. The renovation preserved many original architectural elements such as timber windows, pressed metal ceilings, and ornate fireplaces. A new wing adds 250 square meters to the existing 600 square meters, culminating in a spacious 850 square meter facility that includes 97 childcare places across 8 playrooms, 21 car parks, brand new kitchen, and staff facilities, and three outdoor play areas equipped with architecturally designed forts and natural play equipment
“We are proud to add this beautiful building to our property and childcare portfolio and excited to bring it back to life as a wonderful environment for children to be nurtured”, said Nic De Luca, Managing Director of Deluca Corporation.
The project not only revitalizes a notable historical site but also serves the community by providing a nurturing environment where children can interact with both nature and history. Deluca Corporation is honoured to contribute to the preservation of historical sites with this project, marking their first foray into integrating heritage preservation with modern functionality. This initiative also aligns with their early learning centre’s philosophy to build resilient and mindful children, fostering a learning environment that respects and celebrates the past while nurturing the future.
